COFFEE / QUESTIONS

Coffee questions: extraction, water, and grinders

Start with common questions, then follow each answer to a detailed guide with drawings and sources. Read the scope and limitations of each tool too.

01

How do extraction yield (EY) and strength (TDS) differ?

TDS describes the concentration of dissolved material in the beverage. EY describes the proportion extracted from the dry coffee. Brews with the same TDS can have different EY when dose and beverage mass differ. Neither number alone determines taste.

02

What do pour position and flow rate change during brewing?

Where and how quickly water enters helps explain wetting, mixing, and changes in the water level. Actual drainage and extraction also depend on the dripper, filter, grind, and other conditions. The simulator illustrates flow for learning; it does not predict flavour.

03

How should I compare water filters for coffee?

Start with the source water and the water you want to make, then compare media by the substances they remove or adjust. Sediment, carbon, softening, decarbonisation, and reverse osmosis do different jobs. Check suitability against product specifications and a water analysis.

04

What is the difference between flat and conical burrs?

The two designs arrange burrs and move coffee through them differently. Shape alone does not establish a universal particle-size distribution or flavour. Compare tooth geometry, operating conditions, alignment, and measurement methods alongside the layout.
